Today, November 11, is the day when a number of countries around the world remember their war dead and past and present military service men and women.  The video below is a wonderful and stirring piece of art focussing on the significance of this day.

Here is one person's description of the story behind the video:

On November 11, 1999, Terry Kelly was in a Shoppers Drug Mart store, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the store's PA asking customers who would still be of the premises at 11:00 am to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us. Terry was impressed with . . .

More Than Sixty Dollars PDF Print E-mail

My family and I watch TV the old fashion way - for free. Yes, thanks to the marvel of decades old hardware known as an antenna and rotor atop an old ship's mast, we enjoy 10 or 11 channels of free TV - no cable attached. Like most people, we do have cable in our neighbourhood but my wife and I agree that the channels we get have enough garbage to watch that we don't need to pay the approximate $60.00 a month to have even more to choose from.

To be honest, I guess our TV watching is not totally free. First we use electricity to run it and a few years ago we did have to replace the rotor. Last month, a little gizmo on the antenna itself broke off in the wind and I had to climb up to fix it. To reach the antenna involved quite a setup. I had to put two legs of our stepladder on the railing of our deck and then tie a couple of its rungs to the mast next to it. Next, like Tim the Tool Man Taylor (or is that fool man) I climbed the shifting, swinging ladder and pulled myself up to the top rung of the mast. I made my eldest daughter stand and watch me do this because I figured it would be good to have at least one eyewitness should a coroner's inquiry need to be called. At the most precarious moment of my ascent, she spoke out in a very worried and somewhat anxious tone, "Dad, I don't like this. You are worth more than $60.00 a month." Though I laughed at the literal meaning of her words, my heart was touched by her tender appraisal of my worth as I . . .

New Socks PDF Print E-mail

The other day I decided to treat myself to something I had been saving for a long time - a new pair of socks.

Some time ago after making a large new sock purchase, I buried away in the back of a drawer a nice black pair - still embraced by their sticky band paper. My theory behind this action was that that someday, either if I was out of clean black socks or wanted a fresh, snug new pair for the day, I could just delve into my stash and voilá!

So on the day when I retrieved the above mentioned sock treasure, you can imagine the anticipation and sheer "sock glee" that was mine as I removed the factory wrapping off of my time-capsuled hosiery. I guess it had been quite a while since I purchased those socks because it soon became apparent that the only part of my feet that were going to get in them were my toes. Darn! They are now keeping my wife's feet warm.

Many times in our walks with Christ, we are blessed by having people come into our lives. Whether a new person moving into our neighbourhood, a hurting person at . . .

Race Rocks Christmas PDF Print E-mail

Close to where I live, stands a lighthouse on a group of rocks known as Race Rocks. This lighthouse steers mariners clear of the 8-10 knot (9-12 mph) tide that flows between it and the south coast of Vancouver Island. There are a number of sad tales of ships and lives lost in this treacherous passage of water.

In 1865, lighthouse keeper George Davies and family had for some time been looking forward to a visit from Rosina Davies' brother, sister-in-law, and three friends. On the day of their intended visit, the Davies scanned the nearby shore in anticipation of sighting the boat that would bring family and friends to break the solitude of the lighthouse keeper's family. Sure enough, the visitors did appear as planned, rowing towards their destination, Race Rocks.

When the boat was but 20 feet from its intended landing spot, it came upon a whirlpool and capsized, throwing it's five passengers into the cold, salt water. At the edge of the water, George Davies was helpless. A surveyor was using the keeper's boat and George had been left with neither rope nor life buoy with which to mount a rescue. Quickly, all five were swept away to their deaths. All that was left floating on the surface were some presents that the visitors were bringing with them that tragic day - Christmas Day, 1865.

What a sad story. What a sad picture. We might say, "May nothing like that ever happen again" but the truth is it happens . . .

My Dog Has Fresh Water PDF Print E-mail

Each night before I go to bed, a part of my evening ritual is to check to see if our dog needs her water bowl topped up. Though routine and mundane in nature, it is a spiritual experience for me because when watering our canine I often think of how blessed I am to live in a country, and a house, where a lowly dog drinks good old H2O that is clear, clean, and disease free. I know that it is not so for many humans in this world.

North American pets, having it so well, have inspired me and my family to sponsor a hungry and underprivileged child through the child sponsorship ministry called Compassion (see the banner of the top of this page). Sponsored children receive nourishment, education, and hope for the future through Jesus. Our participation in this is a question of priorities and trying to hold important in life what God holds important in this life.

The Bible says a bit about the care of animals. My favorite verse on that topic is Proverbs 12:10, ?A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.? However, as much as I like that Scripture verse, the key teaching text for where the energies of believers should be focused in charity is James 1:27, ?Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.? From how I look at it, if one becomes . . .
